I met you at the beach today,
Excited for the treasures we might find
Or who would find the most.
(Have we always gone back and forth?)
With heads down, backs bent we talk about our lives, kids, dreams and weird insecurities.
Time passes and when I look up, you are ahead — you are always ahead of me!
I walk faster to catch up and look for treasure you might have missed or dropped for Me to find as was your habit.
I look up and you're a speck on the beach.
How did you get so far ahead?
I yell for you to come back
I have more to say.
Why can't you just stay with me?
But you just smile your smile and wave your little wave.
I looked for you at the beach today, but you weren't there.

Vicki wrote this shortly after our younger sister died of pancreatic cancer. In childhood, Cynthia and I were best of friends; in adulthood, she and Vicki were. They enjoyed hunting for sea glass together.
