Proverbs 23
Saying 7
When you sit and dine with a ruler you've met,
consider with care what before you is set;
imagine a knife at your throat with each bite
if you're one of those with a large appetite.
Avoid your desire for delicate meat,
because it is used as the bread of deceit.
consider with care what before you is set;
imagine a knife at your throat with each bite
if you're one of those with a large appetite.
Avoid your desire for delicate meat,
because it is used as the bread of deceit.
Saying 8
Don't weary yourself with great wealth to be gained,
with understood wisdom, keep yourself restrained.
For money can go in the blink of an eye,
and wealth can sprout wings like an eagle and fly.
with understood wisdom, keep yourself restrained.
For money can go in the blink of an eye,
and wealth can sprout wings like an eagle and fly.
Saying 9
Don't eat with a miser of his bread and cheese,
and do not desire his delicacies;
for he is the type who is counting the cost.
He says, Eat and drink, but the sentiment's lost.
You'll throw up the little you've eaten in haste,
and all of your compliments will be a waste.
and do not desire his delicacies;
for he is the type who is counting the cost.
He says, Eat and drink, but the sentiment's lost.
You'll throw up the little you've eaten in haste,
and all of your compliments will be a waste.
Saying 10
Speak not to the fool and expect to be heard,
for he hates the wisdom of your every word.
for he hates the wisdom of your every word.
Saying 11
Do not cheat your neighbor by moving your lines,
infringe not the orphan by stripping his vines;
because their Redeemer is mighty and strong,
and he will take up their case, righting their wrong.
infringe not the orphan by stripping his vines;
because their Redeemer is mighty and strong,
and he will take up their case, righting their wrong.
Saying 12
Apply your heart to the instruction you hear,
and those words of knowledge that fall on your ear.
and those words of knowledge that fall on your ear.
Saying 13
Correcting your children — you cannot deny,
with moderate punishment, no one will die.
A physical beating will serve your child well,
and may end up rescuing his soul from hell.
with moderate punishment, no one will die.
A physical beating will serve your child well,
and may end up rescuing his soul from hell.
Saying 14
My son, if your heart would pursue to be wise,
my heart would rejoice for my hope realized.
My innermost being rejoices with you
when your lips speak right things and wisdom shines through.
my heart would rejoice for my hope realized.
My innermost being rejoices with you
when your lips speak right things and wisdom shines through.
Saying 15
Do not let your heart envy sinners who wrong,
but live in the fear of the LORD all day long.
For surely there must be a future one day;
and your expectation shall not fade away.
but live in the fear of the LORD all day long.
For surely there must be a future one day;
and your expectation shall not fade away.
Saying 16
Oh, listen, my child, and choose wisdom, my son,
and keep your heart set on the course to be run.
Don't drink with the drunks or abusers of wine,
nor feast with the gluttonous fools when you dine;
for poverty follows wherever they go,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags, head to toe.
and keep your heart set on the course to be run.
Don't drink with the drunks or abusers of wine,
nor feast with the gluttonous fools when you dine;
for poverty follows wherever they go,
and drowsiness clothes them in rags, head to toe.
Saying 17
Give ear to your father — the reason you're here;
despise not your mother, more feeble each year.
Buy truth, but don't sell it at anyone's price;
buy wisdom, instruction, good sense and advice.
A son who is righteous is cause for great joy;
the father who bore him delights in his boy.
Let both of your parents rejoice with great mirth!
Make happy the one who has given you birth!
despise not your mother, more feeble each year.
Buy truth, but don't sell it at anyone's price;
buy wisdom, instruction, good sense and advice.
A son who is righteous is cause for great joy;
the father who bore him delights in his boy.
Let both of your parents rejoice with great mirth!
Make happy the one who has given you birth!
Saying 18
My son, oh my son, give your whole heart to me,
observing my ways, let your eyes look and see.
A harlot's a pit that has trapped those who fell;
an unfaithful wife is a deep, narrow well.
She'll wait, like a bandit, again and again
to ambush and multiply unfaithful men.
observing my ways, let your eyes look and see.
A harlot's a pit that has trapped those who fell;
an unfaithful wife is a deep, narrow well.
She'll wait, like a bandit, again and again
to ambush and multiply unfaithful men.
Saying 19
For who has felt anguish? Or sorrow? Complaint?
Whose bruises are needless? Who's bloodshot or faint?
The one who spends time contemplating his wine,
who mixes then fixes and tastes his design.
Don't look at the wine, it's as red as you please,
it sparkles and bubbles and goes down with ease.
But later you feel you were bit by a snake,
and stung by a viper as you try to wake.
While nightmares and visions and strangeness is viewed,
perversions and babbling and nonsense is spewed.
You'll struggle like sailors within a storm's grip,
like trying to sleep on the mast of a ship.
You'll say, I've been hit, but felt nothing, I think.
Whenever I wake, then I'll have more to drink.
