Mary
John 20:1-17
Its early — Mary seeks the Lord before the light of day.
She walks into the garden where His broken body lay.
And there, outside the tomb, she sees the great stone rolled away.
She quickly runs for help as tears are streaming down her face.
Oh Peter! Simon Peter! He is gone without a trace!
Oh John! They’ve taken Jesus’ body to another place!
Alarmed by Mary’s words they run and find the empty tomb.
Inside, they see the grave clothes in the shadows of the room.
Returning home confused and lost, their hearts are filled with gloom.
But Mary stays, remaining by the sepulcher instead.
She looks into the tomb and sees two angels by the bed;
Both robed in white — one by the foot, the other by the head.
Why do you weep? They question her. She answers in despair,
They took the body of my Lord and I do not know where.
Then turning from the tomb she sees a stranger standing there.
Why do you weep? The stranger asks. Who are you looking for?
Presuming he’s the gardener, she answers by the door,
Please tell me where He is that I may take Him back once more.
Then Jesus whispers, Mary. And she looks in awed surprise
And cries out, Master! Master! She cannot believe her eyes.
But Jesus warns, Don’t touch Me yet, for I have yet to rise,
To meet My Father on His Throne far from this earthly sod.
But go and tell My brothers — tell those near and those abroad,
I go to meet Our Father and I go to meet Our God.
