The Story of Cleopas
Luke 24:13-32
While walking to Emmaus — my companion at my side,
We spoke of what had happened since our Lord was crucified.
We thought He came to save us, but instead our Savior died.
A stranger joined us on our way and walked with us to town.
He asked what things we spoke of. Man, have you not been around?
How can you be so unaware of something so renowned?
The stranger never flinched — he merely questioned us once more.
It’s Jesus — he’s a prophet like there never was before;
He spoke and did such wonders that our priests could not ignore.
This Nazarene was forfeited — arrested, tried, and killed
In hopes that His great words of truth and virtue might be stilled.
But now our hope of Him redeeming us is unfulfilled.
It’s been three days since Jesus died and we are at a loss:
We thought we’d see him on a throne instead of on a cross.
We’re doubtful how to carry on and champion his cause.
Our sisters — just this morning — had some other news to share:
They saw some angels at His tomb who said He wasn’t there!
Our friends confirmed their story — they can’t find Him anywhere.
The stranger said, O foolish men. Such unbelieving hearts!
The prophets wrote about His pain and glory from the start.
From Moses through the prophets, he explained to us each part.
Approaching town, the stranger wished to leave and go his way;
But we prevailed as evening fell, persuading him to stay.
Then at the table, he broke bread and he began to pray.
Our eyes were opened suddenly — how could we be so blind?
Emmanuel! God with us — He had not left us behind!
No stranger in our midst, but with our Master we had dined.
The instant that we knew Him, Jesus disappeared from sight.
Did not our hearts within us burn as Jesus spoke this night?
Praise God, our Savior lives indeed! Praise God, we’ve seen the Light!
