Magnificat
(Mary's Song of Praise)
Luke 1:46-55
The Lord, my soul will magnify;
rejoice in God, my Savior,
who took a lowly maid as I
and looked on her with favor.
All generations yet to be
shall call me blest — not lowly,
for he has done great things for me;
and may his name be holy.
From generations to the next,
his mercy rains as water.
His arm has made the proud perplexed;
his might has made them scatter.
He takes the great and makes them weak,
and from their thrones they tumble;
and in their place, he lifts the meek,
and raises up the humble.
He gives the hungry food to eat
so that they want no longer;
removes the wealthy from their seat
and sends them out with hunger.
And God came to his servant’s aid;
forget his people? Never!
Remembering his promise made
to Abraham forever.
rejoice in God, my Savior,
who took a lowly maid as I
and looked on her with favor.

And Mary said:
"My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me –
holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants for ever,
just as he promised our ancestors."
