Letter/Poem
A little backstory.
When I was younger I went on 3 bike trips with a Christian group called, Men in Motion, out of Mansfield, Ohio. At 14, we took 2 weeks to ride from Mansfield to Virginia Beach and back. At 15, we got bussed out to Colorado and took 3 weeks to loop up through Wyoming and Yellowstone Park, down through Utah and back to Colorado. At 16, we got bussed out to Oregon. We dipped our tires in the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon and rode to Maine and the Pacific Ocean, crossing over to Canada at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This was a 4-week trip and I wrecked near Sault Ste. Marie and cracked my collarbone and had to ride in the truck the rest of the way.
And when I say "bussed", we were in a converted bus that was full of carpet, luxurious seats and sleeping compartments.
So, it was on this third trip, "Portland to Portland", that my Grandma sent me the letter below.

Dear Rob,
Hope by now all is going well and are having good weather which is very important, I'm sure. I thought I might put my thoughts in my very own poetic style. Quite sure this wouldn't be acceptable for a grade in English class — but you'll know I am thinking about you.
Have you known a young man with a bike
and is someone everyone likes?
Well I have a Grandson, handsome and wholesome
and his goal is to win some to Christ.
His group is biking through our nation,
to see the wonders of God's creation.
Some are so awesome — they really scare me.
But God put them there for everyone to see.
My prayer, as they travel, these "Men in Motion"
is that God will keep them safe, from ocean to ocean.
May they have fun when its light and on into the night,
because all their parents can do without fright.
A special tribute to their Leaders!
They know by now — they have lots of "feeders".
When the journey is ended, relaxation begun
May all thank their God, saying, "we sure had fun!"
and is someone everyone likes?

Your loving Grandma Hawkins
Your Grandpa sends lots of love and best wishes too and we will look forward to seeing you before you go South. Expect to have mail at every stop for you — hope it arrives O.K.
