Psalm 80
For the director of music. To the tune of “The Lilies of the Covenant.” Of Asaph. A psalm.
Give ear to us, Shepherd of Israel, hear us!
You lead Joseph's sons like a flock in the field;
enthroned, between cherubim you have been seated,
your radiant glory forever revealed
before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh.
Awaken your power; come save us indeed!
Restore us, O God; make your face shine upon us,
that we may be saved and delivered and freed.
How long, God Almighty of Heavenly Armies
will your anger smolder against prayers we've said?
You've fed us with bread made of tears from our sorrow,
and made us drink bowls full of tears that we've shed.
You've made us an object of scorn to our neighbors,
our enemies mock us and laugh in our face.
Restore us, Almighty of Heavenly Armies,
and let your face shine down and save us with grace.
You brought us from Egypt, a vine you transplanted;
you drove out the nations and planted us there.
You cleared ground, we took root and filled up the landscape.
The mountains were covered with shade everywhere;
the mightiest cedars were veiled with our branches.
We spread to the Mediterranean beach,
from west and the sea to the east and the river
Euphrates, our branches continued their reach.
But why have you broken our walls down and hedges,
allowing our fruit for a stranger to steal?
The boar from the forest devours and wastes it,
and beasts of the field eat whenever they feel.
Return, God Almighty of Heavenly Armies!
And look down from heaven, take care of this vine
that comes from your vineyard that your right hand planted,
the branch you made strong and the son of your line.
They've cut down your vine and have burned it with fire;
let them be destroyed by the look you have shown.
But let your hand be on the man of your right hand,
the son you have raised for your glory, alone.
Then we shall not ever turn back from you — never!
Revive us so that we may on your name call.
Restore us, Almighty of Heavenly Armies!
And let your face shine so we're saved once for all.
