Psalm 77
For the choirmaster. According to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.
I cry out to you, God, for help to appear;
O God, that you one day would listen and hear!
I seek out the LORD when I'm wrecked and distressed,
my hands to the heavens all night have been stretched;
yet I'm unconsoled and my soul finds no rest.
When I think of God, I just groan in complaint;
I feel overwhelmed and my spirit grows faint.
Selah [Interlude]
You keep my eyes open and don't let me sleep;
so troubled am I that I can't even speak.
I think of the old days that I used to know;
remembering fondly those times long ago.
Recalling those nights and the songs that I'd sing;
in searching my heart now, I wonder one thing:
Jehovah's rejection — will it ever end?
Will he never show me his favor again?
Has his lovingkindness and grace ceased to be?
Do God's vows mean naught for those born after me?
Did God forget how to be merciful now?
Has he slammed the door to compassion somehow?
Selah [Interlude]
I said to myself, I am grieved beyond tears;
your right hand has changed after all of these years.
Recalling your deeds that our forefathers told;
yes, I well remember your wonders of old.
Reflecting on all of the things you have done;
I ponder on your mighty works, one by one.
Your way, God, is holy in all that you do.
What god is like our God — what god is like you?
For you are the God who does wonders, alone;
your strength among everyone, you have made known.
With might you've redeemed all your people indeed,
the children of Jacob, and Joseph's own seed.
Selah [Interlude]
When water saw you, God, they swirled and sprayed,
and even the Red Sea was deeply afraid.
The clouds poured down rain, and the skies filled with sound;
like arrows, your lightning flashed, piercing the ground.
The crash of your thunder was heard through the night;
your lightning bolts lit up the world with your light;
and earth shook and quaked as it trembled in fright.
Your path through the sea and the waters were shown;
your footprints were followed, unseen and unknown.
You guided your people like sheep, by the hand
of Moses and Aaron to your promised land.
I cry out to you, God, for help to appear;
O God, that you one day would listen and hear!
