Psalm 56
To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Silent Dove in Distant Lands.”
A Michtam of David when the Philistines captured him in Gath.
Have mercy on me, God, for evil men hound me,
all day have they pressed their attack.
Pursued, I am trampled; all day they confound me;
and, proudly, they've given no slack.
When I am afraid and with foes all around me,
I'll trust you and never look back.
Both God and his word have my undying praises;
in God will I trust, through and through.
Should I be afraid of the strife that man raises?
For what can mere flesh ever do?
All day they keep twisting my words to their phrases;
their evil thoughts towards me accrue.
They gather together in secretive spying,
while planning my death at some stage.
Escape from their crimes? This, you're surely denying;
God, bring them all down in your rage!
Collect in your bottle the tears I've been crying —
your book should have page and page.
My enemies turned back the day I entreated;
you're with me — of this, I'm assured.
I praise God for what he has vowed and repeated;
the LORD, I am praising his word.
In God will I trust for my fears are defeated;
what man does can all be endured.
Fulfilling my vows that I've made, God, that bind me,
I now offer thanks to repay.
For you've saved my soul from a death that would find me,
and kept my feet straight in your way;
now walking in God's light before and behind me:
the life-giving light of the day.
