Psalm 31
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
In you, LORD, do I seek protection;
oh, never let me be disgraced.
In righteousness, come to my rescue.
Incline your ear for my request to
deliver and save me posthaste!
To me be my rock of protection,
a stronghold of safety, indeed.
Since you are my high promontory;
because of your name and your glory,
I'll follow wherever you lead.
You free me of nets laid before me
that enemies hide from my view,
for you are my refuge I hide in.
In you will my spirit abide in;
redeem me, God, faithful and true.
I hate those who worship vain idols;
I trust in Jehovah, alone.
I love that your love's my addiction,
because you have seen my affliction;
the pain and the anguish I've known.
You've not let my foes overtake me;
with freedom to move — I've been blessed.
Have mercy, LORD, my troubles doom me,
my sorrow and grieving consume me;
my body and soul are distressed.
My life is exhausted from anguish,
with sadness I'm drained more each day.
My years are used up with my pining;
my health, from my sin, is declining;
my body is wasting away.
Because of my great adversaries,
my neighbors regard me with shame —
especially friends who are nearest,
who flee when they see me, those dearest,
escaping the way that they came.
Like one who is dead, I'm forgotten;
I'm tossed like an old, broken pot.
Their slanderous rumors are dire;
together they work to conspire
and scheme of my death in their plot.
In you do I trust, LORD Jehovah;
and I declare, You are my God.
Your hands hold my future — each hour;
deliver me from my foes' power,
from those who would hunt me abroad.
May your favor shine on your servant;
your love and your mercy will save!
Don't let me be shamed when I face them;
I call on you, LORD, to disgrace them,
and silence them all in their grave.
May arrogant lips then be silenced —
their insolent tongues so none hear
their lies of the righteous they've made up.
How great is the goodness you've laid up
for those who show reverent fear.
You lavish on those seeking safety
in view of the worldly ones.
You hide them in your secret presence
from human intrigues and their pretense,
kept safe from the strife of their tongues.
Oh, blest be the LORD, his love's steadfast
shown me through a city's blockade.
In panic, I cried out for mercy:
I'm cut off from you! But you heard me
and answered my call for your aid.
Show love to the LORD, all you holy!
The LORD keeps his faithful and just;
the proud — the LORD’s harshly repaid them.
Take courage and be not afraid then,
who wait on the LORD with your trust.
In you, LORD, do I seek protection;
oh, never let me be disgraced.
