Psalm 22
For the director of music. To the tune of "The Doe of the Morning." A psalm of David.
My God, oh my God, tell me why you forsake me?
Why are you so far away in my grief?
My God, I cry out every day without answer;
nightly I call, but I find no relief.
Yet you are enthroned because you, God, are holy;
you are the one in whom Isr'el esteemed.
In you have our fathers and ancestors trusted;
they trusted you, LORD, and they were redeemed.
To you they cried out, they were saved and were rescued;
trusting in you they were never disgraced.
But I am a worm and far less than a human,
scorned and despised by the people I've faced.
All those who have seen me have mocked me with insults;
sneering and jeering and shaking their head:
He trusts in the LORD, so let's see him delivered!
Let the LORD rescue his friend, they have said.
You safely took me from the womb of my mother;
giving me hope while at my mother's teat.
Since birth you have known me; from my mother's belly
you've been my God since I learned how to eat.
Don't stand so far from me, for near me is trouble;
there's none to help me, indeed, that I've found.
Like bulls do my enemies tightly surround me;
fierce bulls of Bashan have circled around.
Like lions, my enemies keep their mouths open,
roaring and eager to maul me like prey.
I'm poured out like water; my bones are disjointed;
my heart's like wax that is melting away.
My mouth like a potsherd, my dry tongue is cleaving;
you, God, have left me to die in the heat.
Surrounded by dogs and a gang that encircles;
enemies pierce both my hands and my feet.
My bones can be counted as I am extended;
people are staring and I am exposed.
They gamble, dividing my garments among them,
casting their lots for the whole of my clothes.
Do not stand so far away from me, Jehovah.
You are my strength, so come quickly and help.
Oh, rescue my soul from the sword and deliver
my precious life from the cur and the whelp.
Deliver me now from the jaws of the lion;
horns of the wild oxen lest I be gored.
And I will proclaim of your name to my brothers;
in their assembly will I praise you, LORD.
Those fearing the LORD, praise him! You sons of Jacob!
Children of Isr'el, revere him with awe!
For he's not belittled the cries of the needy;
nor hid his face but attended their call.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
everyone knows I've fulfilled what I vowed.
The humble will eat and will no more be wanting;
those who would seek him will praise him aloud.
Their hearts will rejoice with a joy everlasting!
Earth will remember and turn to the LORD.
And all of the peoples and nations will worship,
bowing before him of their own accord.
Dominion belongs to the LORD as do nations.
Prosperous men of earth worship and feast;
ere turning to dust they will all kneel before him,
even the ones who are newly deceased.
Our children as well as their children will serve him,
telling the next generation to come.
Declaring his righteousness to those not born yet;
they will hear everything that he has done.
