Psalm 140
To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
Deliver me, LORD, from these men who are wicked;
preserve me, I pray, from the violence of men,
who plan and devise in their heart what is evil,
and gather and stir up wars time and again.
They sharpen their tongues like a serpent's, that drips
their poisonous, venomous words from their lips.
Selah [Interlude]
O LORD, keep me out of the hands of the wicked.
Protect me from those who are violent and mean,
who scheme and who plot and who cause me to stumble.
The proud have set for me a snare that's unseen;
they've stretched out the cords of the net that they lay,
and lure me with traps they have set in my way.
Selah [Interlude]
Oh, you are my God, I have said to Jehovah,
give ear to my pleas — for your grace, to survive.
O Sovereign LORD, you're my strength and salvation,
you cover my head when my battles arrive.
LORD, send their desires and schemes down the drain
lest any success make them even more vain.
Selah [Interlude]
My foes who have risen and have me surrounded,
let their lips of mischief advance their demise.
Rain hot coals upon them and cast them in fire!
From bottomless pits, may they nevermore rise!
May slanderers in our land not be established;
let evil hunt down men of violence indeed.
I know that the LORD provides poor men their justice,
defending the causes of all who have need.
The righteous will surely give thanks to your name;
and dwelling with you will be those without blame.
