Proverbs 20
If wine is a mocker, then beer's full of rage,
a drunkard is foolish no matter their age.
The wrath of a king is a roar lions make,
to anger him could be a deadly mistake.
Avoiding a fight is an honor for man,
but fools begin quarrels as fast as they can.
The sluggard will choose not to plow in the fall,
at harvest he'll look, but have nothing at all.
Deep water's like counsel that's offered by kings,
but wise men know how to reveal hidden things.
So many may claim their devotion to you,
but who can find one who is faithful and true?
The men of integrity justly behave,
their children still blessed though these men lie in graves.
When kings choose to judge from the seat of their throne,
they winnow out evil with their eyes, alone.
Who boasts and can say, My intentions are pure;
I'm cleansed of my sin, and of this I am sure?
The differing measures and differing weights —
the LORD detests both and the practice, he hates.
Small children are known by their actions by sight,
regardless if they have been pure or upright.
With ears made for hearing and eyes made to see,
the LORD has made both gifts for you and for me.
Sleep not, in excess, you'll grow poor from your bed,
but open your eyes, and you'll have enough bread.
It's worthless! It's worthless! the buyer will say,
then boast of his bargain when he's on his way.
Both rubies and gold — there are plenty of them,
but knowledge on lips is a rare, precious gem.
Take cloaks from those lending to strangers unknown,
collateral pledged for the foreigner's loan.
Bread gained by deceit will taste sweeter to man,
but later his mouth will hold gravel and sand.
A plan comes together when counsel is heard,
and wars are not waged without wisdom conferred.
A gossip breathes secrets like air from a lung;
avoid those possessing wide lips and smooth tongue.
Those cursing their father or mother will find
their lamp will be snuffed in their darkest of time.
One finds those estates that are snatched up too soon
will not, in the end, always be such a boon.
Don't say, I'll avenge and repay you one day!
But, wait on the LORD to avenge you his way.
The LORD detests unequal weights in his sight,
and dishonest scales are not fair, and not right.
The LORD has determined our steps as he may,
so how can a man understand his own way?
Don't make God a promise without thinking twice,
for later you may regret paying that price.
A wise king will winnow the wicked like grain,
and crush them with his threshing wheel with disdain.
The spirit of man is the LORD's candlelight,
exposing the depths of the soul that we hide.
Through mercy and truth is the king made secure,
and by lovingkindness the throne will endure.
The glory of youth is their strength that they bear,
the splendor of age is their head of gray hair.
The blows of a beating scrub evil away,
so, likewise do stripes clean the soul of decay.
