Proverbs 17
Tis better a dry crust in sweet solitude,
than conflict and strife in a house filled with food.
In charge of the master's son, causing great shame,
wise slaves share the children's inheritance claim.
Both silver and gold are refined in the fire,
but Yahweh tries hearts to see what they desire.
The wicked will listen to lips of deceit,
and liars hear lies other liars repeat.
You're mocking your Maker when mocking the poor,
your fate, when you're glad for disaster, is sure.
The children of children are crowns for the old;
and parents, the glory their children uphold.
An eloquent speech is unfit for a fool,
still less is the lie to the prince who would rule.
A bribe is a charm as those bribing soon learn;
that charm lets them prosper wherever they turn.
Concealing a fault seeks out love and amends,
but dwelling on it surely separates friends.
A single rebuke does far more, as a rule,
then one hundred strokes on the back of a fool.
A rebel seeks only rebellion and hate,
cruel messengers, then, will be sent to his gate.
Far safer to meet a bear robbed of her young,
then being with fools when their follies have sprung.
If evil's repaid for the good you receive,
know evil, from your house, will not ever leave.
Strife starts out like water released from a spout;
abandon the quarrel before it bursts out.
Acquitting the guilty, condemning the just,
the LORD is repulsed and hates both with disgust.
How senseless for fools to have money on hand
for purchasing wisdom they can't understand.
A friend will be loyal, whose love won't recede,
a brother is born for a moment of need.
It's foolish to take on another man's debt;
a shaking of hands for a life of regret.
Whoever loves quarrels and trouble loves sin;
the one with the highest gate asks trouble in.
A man with a crooked heart will not succeed;
and one who speaks lies will find troubles, indeed.
To father a fool brings a sorrow and shame;
for parents of fools have no joy, only pain.
A glad heart improves health and makes bodies thrive;
depression makes living so hard to survive.
A man who is wicked keeps bribes out of sight,
subverting the lines between wrong versus right.
A sensible person keeps wisdom in view,
but fools search the world for what's shiny and new.
A fool, to his father, brings sorrow and strain,
regret to his mother who bore him in pain.
It's not good to punish the innocent one,
and wrong to strike nobles for good things they've done.
The one who has knowledge is one who's restrained,
a wise man's cool spirit keeps tempers maintained.
For fools are thought wise when they don't say a word;
and prudent when holding their tongue and not heard.
than conflict and strife in a house filled with food.
