Based on the scriptures found in The Purpose-Driven Life – Day 16

Love is the Thing

Based on 1 John 3:18; 2 John 1:6; John 13:35; 1 Corinthians 13:3b; Matthew 22:37-40; Matthew 25:34-46; Proverbs 3:27; 1 Corinthians 13:13
I love you is action, not merely a phrase
that’s whispered in somebody’s ear;
and love isn’t something that someone displays
a couple of times through the year.

But love is the life we’re commanded to live —
the thing that will set us apart.
The world cannot have what we don’t have to give —
we’re spent without love in our heart.

We’re told we should cherish the Lord with our all,
our neighbor as much as ourselves.
Beyond our arm’s reach — will we answer the call?
Or leave it for somebody else?

The naked, the hungry, the poor and diseased,
the prisoner — lost and ignored;
if we’ve shown our love to the lowest of these,
then we’ve shown our love to our Lord.

Today is the day that the world needs our love;
tomorrow, this chance may be gone.
To offer a faith and a hope’s not enough,
for love is the thing that lives on.

1 John 3:18 (TEV)
My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.
2 John 1:6 (NCV)
Love means living the way God commanded us to live.  As you have heard from the beginning, his command is this: Live a life of love.
John 13:35 (LB)
Your strong love for each other will prove to the world that you are my disciples.
1 Corinthians 13:3b (Msg)
No matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Matthew 22:37-40 (NLT)
“You must love the Lord your God with all you heart . . . .”  This is the first and greatest commandment.  A second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.
Matthew 25:40 (NRSV)
Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.
Proverbs 3:27 (TEV)
Whenever you possibly can, do good to those who need it.  Never tell your neighbor to wait until tomorrow if you can help them now.
1 Corinthians 13:13 (NCV)
These three things continue forever: faith, hope, and love.  And the greatest of these is love.
