A Poem for my Father
My dad and I, we strolled the beach
and talked of things within our reach.
An ornery lad and wizened man:
mine — a dream, and his — a plan.
My many dreams would all fall through
to leave me guessing what to do.
But Father's plans would all stand firm
and he would finish each one's term.
I could have learned so much from him:
he — so bright, and I — so dim.
But no, I only wanted out
to see what life was all about.
I never learned all that I had
the chance to learn from good ole' Dad.
And at the time I rarely shared
how much for him I really cared.
I rarely tried, but then again,
I guess I really didn't — then.
and talked of things within our reach.
An ornery lad and wizened man:
mine — a dream, and his — a plan.
My many dreams would all fall through
to leave me guessing what to do.
But Father's plans would all stand firm
and he would finish each one's term.
I could have learned so much from him:
he — so bright, and I — so dim.
But no, I only wanted out
to see what life was all about.
I never learned all that I had
the chance to learn from good ole' Dad.
And at the time I rarely shared
how much for him I really cared.
I rarely tried, but then again,
I guess I really didn't — then.
I guess what I would like to say
is that I really love you.
On Father's Day and everyday
I think the world of you.
is that I really love you.
On Father's Day and everyday
I think the world of you.
