Psalm 59
For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.
When Saul had sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him.
Deliver me, God, from my enemies' violence;
from those men who rise up against me, defend.
Deliver me from those who practice injustice,
and come to my rescue from bloodthirsty men.
To ambush me, fierce men are gathered and waiting,
but what could my sin or offence to them be?
Though I've done no wrong, an attack they're preparing.
Awake and arise and take notice of me!
O LORD God of Heavenly Armies, Almighty,
O LORD God of Israel, rise and awake
and punish the heathen and those hostile nations,
and do not be gracious to them for my sake.
Selah [Interlude]
They come out when night falls like vicious dogs howling
and prowl through the city without any fear.
Such filth that they spew — words like swords that are cutting:
Who cares what we say since none hear us, they sneer.
But you, LORD, will laugh at them; mocking the nations.
I'll wait for you, God, O my strength and defense.
My God in his love and his mercy will meet me,
and let me have vengeance at my foes' expense.
Don't kill them, my people will quickly forget it;
but scatter and bring them down, O LORD, our shield.
Because of the sinful things they have been saying,
let them be ensnared as their pride is revealed.
Because of their curses and lies that they utter,
consume them in anger until they are gone!
And let all the people know God rules in Jacob,
and will to the ends of the earth and beyond.
Selah [Interlude]
Returning at nightfall like vicious dogs howling
who prowl through the city to hunt far and wide.
They wander to scavenge for food to devour,
and growl all night long if they're not satisfied.
For me, I will sing of your strength and your power;
each morning, I'll sing about your tenderness.
For you've been to me a safe haven and refuge,
a fortress I've found on my day of distress.
To you, O my Strength, I'll sing praises alone;
for God is my stronghold, whose mercy he's shown.
