Psalm 50
A Psalm of Asaph
The Mighty One, LORD God, Jehovah, has spoken,
and there's no escaping his roar;
he summons the earth from where morning has broken,
to where the sun's setting once more.
From Zion, perfection of beauty, he showers
his brilliance and radiance shines.
He comes not in silence, but flame that devours;
a raging storm round him entwines.
He summons the heavens and earth at his pleasure,
to judge if his people have strayed.
Assemble my saints for their covenants measure
in sacrificed offerings made.
The heavens proclaim and the heavens declare,
that God is a judge who is righteous and fair.
Selah [Interlude]
Oh, hear me, my people, what I'm testifying;
O Israel, I am your God.
It's not lack of sacrifice you've been supplying,
nor offerings you've always brought.
For I have no need of the bulls from your chattel,
nor goats from your flocks you confine.
I own every beast of the forest — the cattle
on one thousand hillsides are mine.
I know every bird in the mountain tops, wheeling;
all beasts and the insects that crawl.
My hunger is nothing that I'll be revealing;
the earth's mine and I own it all.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls no longer living;
or drink blood from goats when they die?
Present God your sacrifice of true thanksgiving,
and pay your vows to the Most High.
And call me in times of your troubled affliction;
when rescued, then glorify me.
But God tells the wicked, What gives you permission
to follow my law and decree?
You hated my discipline and my instructions,
and trashed my words under your feet.
When you saw a thief, you pursued introductions,
and threw in your lot with the cheat.
Your evil has rein of your mouth like no other;
deceit has unharnessed your tongue.
You sit and malign the good name of your brother;
you slander your own mother's son.
When you did these things, I was silent, unmoving,
and you thought that we were the same.
But now I've arraigned you — it's you I'm reproving;
and I have presented my claim.
Repent! Don't forget, or I'll tear you to pieces,
there's nothing that any can do.
Your thanks gives me glory; if your evil ceases,
I'll show my salvation to you.
