Psalm 40
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
Upon LORD, Jehovah, I've patiently prayed;
his ear is inclined to the cry that I made.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
up out of the mud and the slime that was there.
He placed both my feet on the rock that was sure;
established my steps so my path was secure.
He put in my mouth a new song to be sung,
a hymn full of praise to my God on my tongue.
For many will see it, and many be awed,
and many will trust in the LORD as their God.
How blest are those making the LORD as their trust,
avoiding the proud and the lies that they thrust.
So many, my God, are the works of your hand;
too many to count are the things you have planned.
You haven't an equal with whom to compare;
your deeds are too many for me to declare.
Our sacrifice, burning — you did not desire;
sin offerings, given — you do not require.
And then I said, Here I am, come, look and see;
the scroll of the book has been written of me.
My God, I take pleasure in doing your will;
your law is inscribed on my heart with your quill.
I preach of your justice wherever I go;
I've no fear of speaking out, LORD, as you know.
I've not kept your righteousness hid in my heart,
but spoke of your faithfulness right from the start.
Your kindness and mercy, I've never concealed,
but, rather, your truth to all people revealed.
Withhold not your mercy, LORD, neither your grace;
but lovingly keep me in constant embrace.
For troubles surround me — too many to count!
My sins piled so high that I cannot surmount.
Outnumbering all of the hairs on my head,
I've lost all my courage, my heart's filled with dread.
Be pleased, LORD, to rescue and save me, I pray!
Come quickly, LORD, hasten to help me today!
Those seeking my life, be confused and ashamed;
those wishing me harm, be repelled and defamed.
Let those who would cry out, Aha, you've been caught!,
be wholly ashamed for the trouble they've wrought.
May those who would seek you be glad and rejoice,
shout, Great is the LORD!, those you've saved, in one voice.
Regarding myself, I'm as poor as you'll find,
and yet I am constantly on the LORD's mind.
For you are my helper, my savior and stay;
deliver me, O my God, without delay.
