Job 35
Elihu Reminds Job of God's Justice
or
Judge, Jury and Executioner
based on Job 35
your case is before him
Job 35:9
Job 35:9
Then Elihu said:
You think you are just and convinced you are right
by claiming, I'm righteous in God's holy sight?
Yet ask, What advantage is gained in my plight?
Am I better off without sin?
I'll give you, as well as your friends, my reply.
You need only look to the heavenly sky,
and gaze at the clouds that are passing you by,
for there, in the heights, I'll begin.
Think, how does your sin affect God deep inside?
Or when your transgressions have been multiplied?
Would righteousness, then, give him some sense of pride?
Some gift you could possibly give?
Your wickedness only affects those like you;
your righteousness — only humanity, too.
Oppression cries out with each turn of the screw;
the masses are dying to live.
None ask, Where is God, my Creator and Might,
the one who gives songs in the still of the night?
He makes us much wiser than birds in their flight,
and smarter than beasts of the earth.
For when they cry out, God will answer them not;
because of their pride in their actions and thought.
God will not hear any vain pleas they have got,
nor will God consider their worth.
You say you can't see him, but, Job, he is there;
your case is before him so do not despair.
Just wait for his answer and it will be fair;
for trusting plus time equals hope.
You've also declared that God's wrath does not burn,
that punishing sin is not God's chief concern.
But, Job, you speak nonsense; you've so much to learn.
Quite frankly, you sound like a dope.
by claiming, I'm righteous in God's holy sight?
